Socialism, Which Rights You will Lose?

200+ years of gains and benefits; autonomous lifestyles and the freedoms and liberties that allow you to decide everything that matters to you and your life.

You won't like having the government dictate what, when, where and how you work, live and play; and what you are allowed to think, do, see or say; even, what you can eat and how much of it you can buy or have, and what clothes you can wear, what colors, and when.

Who you are seen with, where you can go and be; and what you can discuss; what you can buy, what you can own or use, and how long you can use it after you pay the special use taxes.

Voting rights are taken for granted by most of the modern world and held sacred.  One person, one vote that counts for the candidate or issue you choose.  In Democracies and many representative republics your choices are secret and fairly certain to be counted accurately.  There are usually many candidates from various parties and philosophies and initiatives of many conflicting views.

In most Socialist countries, if you are fortunate enough to be among those allowed to vote, alternatives to the party in power and ideas different than the ruling party dogma are very infrequent.  Often, the only possible vote is for or against the leader in power.  Few voters survive long after voting No.  Rarely is there a viable alternative candidate to vote for, and influential supporters of them often don't make it to a ballot box, or their ballot is disqualified because they are found mentally incompetent, or charged and convicted of serious crimes making them ineligible to vote from the asylum or prison.

In most Socialist countries, you can buy a TV, but you can't watch it without an annual permit.  Then you can only watch government authorized programs.

In some countries you can buy music and a player, but you can't play it at a gathering of your friends in public or privately, without an entertainment permit and annual fee.  You can't play or listen to restricted or censored music or performers.

In some Socialist and Communist countries you can get on the waiting list for a tightly controlled and monitored government cell phone, or a restricted and monitored computer or tablet with limited Internet access.  If your not an active ruling party member, your wait might be painfully long, like decades.

In some socialist countries you can't buy or have anything not on the authorized list.  And if you can get it, it's usually only available in the socialist party colors, often black and some unnameable color.

If you save up something useful, and the government stores run out, you can't sell yours to those that can't get any.  If the government finds out you horded it, they will confiscate it for distribution to loyal party dignitaries, not your ailing parents or sick friends.

Get used to shortages, outages and ancient versions of consumer products and medications.

Ownership rights to anything you create, perpetual rights to anything you buy, ownership of any resources you discover are non-existent.  If you concealed that you have them, they will be taken and you will be punished as a threat to your comrade's and the socialist party, and possibly mentally ill, or needing another indoctrination session or two.

Those who have gained special rights because of historical mistreatment, or deserving addition help overcoming defects and deficiencies; you will lose them.  If you work tirelessly for the party in power you may get a few back.  If you gained privileges because you are different, forget them.

Everything belongs to the party in charge, or will; if they discover you have it, it will be seized.

Think long and hard before trading freedom and opportunity for free stuff you could buy if you had your own stuff or your own money back.

Cut Spending, Freeze Hiring!

Freeze replacement hiring, freeze hiring to unfilled slots authorized in the previous two administrations.

Do it immediately, and keep doing it until the burn rate is less than incoming revenue!

Shrink the number of Civilian Employees, Executive Appointments, and contract employees by 5%  per year until every Agency, Department, Bureau, Commission, Institute, and Office has cut at least 10% of the employees of record as of today.  Eliminate all the vacant billets.

A few years ago I went through the annual budget and the actual expenditures two years after the end of the fiscal year (minus very secret projects, and some other well hidden stuff) and I easily found 1200 programs and organizations that were not required by legislation or regulation.

Some hadn't done anything useful since the late 1920's, and some sprouted recently from a feeling that "the Government" should do something about an actual or imagined vulgarity of real life that needed a just correction on behalf of the embarrassed parties, even though no known citizen had sought any such adjudication.

Some need to be collapsed back into their parent organization.  BLM back into Dept. of Interior.

Some need permanent closure or just don't fund them.  For instance; PBS, PBR, Institute for the Humanities,

Some need serious mission and staffing re-evaluation (i.e. Dept. of Energy, Dept. of Education, Dept. of Commerce, except; ICC moved to IRS, and Import/Export Bank to Federal Reserve System).

Some never should have been the "Governments" business.  No insurances, not the un-Affordable Care Act, not Social Security, Disability, Medicare, Medicaid, Flood Insurance, crop insurance; any other insurance product that requires conservation of funds locked up where no idiots in Congress can take the reserve funds for any reason and obligate the general budget to cover the benefits plus lost interest on what was set-aside funds.

Some were made even less effective, slower and more expensive by "Government" meddling.

Basically; smaller, less expensive, less intrusive Federal Government.

Stop the idea that government needs to fix every consequence of poor choices made by individuals.

More Socialism, Ignorant!

Our country has more social programs than it can afford now. We have more socialist tendencies than our culture should tolerate.

None are working well, most do have enough revenue to pay their benefits without general tax revenue transfers.  Most will be in massive deficits in a few years, some have had 100's of billions of dollars of debt over several years.

We have granted tax exempt status to way too many organizations, Churches, Unions, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's) and Foundations, many of whom do little or no social good, but for laundering the monies of the rich, to exempt themselves from income and profit taxes they should be paying.  Not to mention phony expenses that do nothing to accomplish the avowed purposes of their charters.

IRS needs to have cracked down on them long ago. 

Now the ignorant, but well-meaning are clamoring for more Social Programs that cannot possibly be afforded from any source, National, State or local.

Stop! look at the history of Socialist Countries and large scale socialist programs.  They all eventually run out of other peoples money, benefit outlays always exceed projected revenues.

They are poorly managed, constantly allowing new benefits without new revenue.  And ignoring the warnings from knowledgeable Actuary's about insufficient future revenue volumes and sources.

You want benefits?

Learn to do things people might need or want.
Get a job or two. Go to work.
Learn to manage your life and your money sensibly.
Spend less than you make.
Carefully invest most of what you save.
Save some for unpredictable expenses.
Save some for known future expenses.
Spend your whole life learning new things.

Preparing for Climate Change, not fighting it

In this Solar system, Earth is certainly a planet of Climate Change.  
During its history our planet has undergone many rapid and robust
climate changes.

Historically, and currently our sun gets hotter and hotter on its way
to eventual Supernova. The sun is the primary source of energy
and heat on earth.  Earth's orbit is in the zone where water can
normally be a liquid, not always vapor, not always solid ice.  
The Liquid Water Zone is moving away from the sun as it grows
hotter. I’m told we are about 60% away from the very cold
always frozen boundary, and 40% from the too hot, no liquid
water on the surface boundary.

Physical proximity and solar chemistry realities mean; in a few
billion years no liquid water on this planet's surface, and not
much else anyone would recognize.

That means there is little if anything mankind can do about
persistent warming.

The next most important source of heat and energy on this
planet is it's molten core and tidal forces from our beautiful
singular moon.

Volcanic eruptions spew heat, various gases, pyroclastic
ash and debris, and molten lava heat blobs and ribbons
onto land, under seas and under ice fields in about 20
places, plus or minus a few, around the world day and night.  
Thanks to our moon’s tidal forces on earth’s crust and core,
our molten core and its related products can always find
their way to the surface and into the atmosphere.

I can’t imagine anyway the inept, incompetent and
uncooperative creatures on this planet could do
anything to change planetary, solar, or cosmic physics.

What should humans be doing?

First, stop thinking we collectively or individually, can
do any perceptible thing about the powerful planetary
and solar forces of the cosmos.

Next, make plans and conserve resources needed to
avoid the effects of climate changes.  Like; changes
in food growing regions, increased energy generation
for food distribution and long-term storage and much
greater habitation air conditioning; more energy for
making and moving clean water to widely dispersed
human populations.  

Enormous infrastructure needs will increase
dramatically as people migrate toward polar regions
to avoid insect borne diseases and low nutrient foods
as the Tropic and Subtropic regions grow wider and
hotter. Waste handling and treatment, crowd control,
policing and punishment; medical treatment and its
training, facilities and equipment must expand
exponentially in new regions with many new demands.

Next, some new social systems; nothing like the weak
ineffectual national and world systems of today.
Reliable and sustainable for millennia; in some
incorruptible organizational way to assure that wealth
is conserved, set aside, safe guarded carefully,
and wisely disbursed to accomplish the gigantic
projects and programs needed to sustains human
population in the late stages of mankind on this planet.

This planet will get hotter each millennium, regardless
of what human populations do or do not do in their
imaginary fight with the global climate.

The only logical effort is preparation for cataclysmic
impacts; opposing cosmic forces by tinkering with
climate manifestations is wasteful, ignorant and futile.

Save for, and be prepared to, make massive
adjustment as changing climates and their
advantages and penalties will certainly impact the
unprepared and immobile very harshly.  

Be prepared to move toward polar regions and
away from sea level coastal regions.

Humans vs Solar Physics; who are the easy winners?
Solar Radiation and Gravitational Forces.

Humans are not powerful or knowledgeable enough to manipulate the sun, the moon, our molten core or the chemistry of our atmosphere.

Don't pick fights with cosmic forces we barely understand and can't effect!

Abundant Health Care is Cheaper

The current Government Health Care program (Insurance, taxes and regulations) and its planned amendments do nothing to reduce the cost of Health Care.  The current efforts, when fully executed, may lower the cost of Health Insurance slightly.

The focus of all this thrashing about concerning the costs of Health Insurance are badly misguided.

Health Care costs are what matters.  Nothing is being done about Care costs and nothing is planned to be done.

Millions of people must travel hundreds of miles to get to very limited modern Health Care in the rural parts of many states, in the inland west and central states.

Health Care costs, once you account for taxes, regulations, restrictions, administration, patents on medicine and equipment, corruption and cronyism, are about Supply and Demand.

Good old supply and Demand market forces.

The past 7+ years much has been done to increase Demand. (ObamaCare)  And if it can be believed, millions of more people have easier access to insurance coverage, and therefore millions more demanding much more care. (scarcity)

Scarcity of supply + (plus) rapidly increasing demand = (equals) unnecessarily high prices + (plus) ignorant subsidies and arcane unnecessary government regulations = (equals)  the foolish mess we have now!

Little, if anything, has been done to increase supply:

No additional funding to educate more doctors per thousand people.

No increase in the rate of nurses trained per year, say an additional 10,000.

No increase in the number of Physicians Assistants, say 10,000 more annually.

No rapid increase of new Hospitals, expansions, (5,000) or branch clinics (10,000).  In fact many have been restricted, closed or withdrawn from rural locations; or stripped of diagnostic capability.

If lower Health Care costs are desired, lower Health Insurance won’t do it.  It just increases Demand.

What’s needed is increased Health care supply.

More facilities, many more doctors, more PA’s, more nurses, much more widespread modern diagnostic equipment, and modern communication for remote analysis.  More widespread medical transportation and many more emergency medical response personnel.

With an overabundance of actual Medical Care, you will see dramatic declines in care costs.

And simple easy access to good modern Health Care for all our citizens, for less Federal tax money which is currently being wasted on subsidizing ridiculously over priced Health Insurance.

And maybe a lot less fraud and a lot fewer extremely wealthy doctors, hospitals, medical associations, and insurance companies.  

 

If you must subsidize something, make it abundant Health Care.

Federal Government, Much Smaller!

Many Fewer and Much Less

That’s what I think is needed and quickly.

Many fewer Departments, Agencies, Divisions, Bureaus, Institutes, Offices and Committees, and many fewer named and unnamed meaningless subdivisions.

Much less of the things specifically enumerated by the Constitution as Federal Government, and none of the things not listed.  

Especially not those reserved for the several States; and none of the things you think the people would want so they might vote for you.  None of things special interest groups or lobbyists tell you they want that are not enumerated in the Constitution as Federal, and very few of the things are enumerated.

Cut actual spending to no more than revenue received.  Never add anything to the National Debt again.  If you don’t have it, you can’t spend it.  Use all surpluses to pay down the National Debt.  Repeal the authorization to borrow, you have proven repeatedly you cannot manage borrowed money.  You can’t even manage regular tax revenue

Reduce Federal regulations to very few meaningful (meaning they accomplish their stated purpose without unintended consequences) and cost efficient (meaning they cost less than they are worth to all affected parties) determined by a consortium of professional private sector accountants of well known integrity.

Reduce Federal Entitlements to the minimum helpful allotment. Reduce associated staffing.  Limit lengths of eligibility specific each kind of aid.  It’s a hand up!.  Not a lifetime contract.

Phase out all Federal Government Insurance programs, Social Security, Medicare, Disability, Loan, Flood, Crop, and Tornado, etc.  Get the Feds out of the insurance business; they’re are not authorized and they’re very poor at it.

Stop borrowing money to fund deficit spending.  Stop creating money unsupported by our economic value.  

Repeal most taxes, simplify the remainder.  Establish a single tax rate percentage.  Stop taxing income.  Tax expenditures of every kind from every source, individual, business and all non-profits.at a single rate whether you like the product or service, think its good or bad for people, or just don’t like it.  Start at a fraction of 1%, never to exceed 1% for any reason.  

If you buy nothing, you pay nothing!

Repeal all excise taxes and hidden taxes; or make them known by labeling every affected product or service with the hidden tax amount so everyone can see how much is tax and how much is actual product costs, and repeal most.

Collapse most organizations into their parent Departments, substantially reduce missions and staffs.  Repeal massive amount of enabling legislation and regulations, severely cut all budgets.  Size staffs at no more than 80% of remaining missions and functions.

Stop buying or seizing land and building facilities.  The Federal Government owns or controls much more land, equipment, material and buildings than can possibly be used, especially in the States west of the Mississippi River.  Sell all land and property not used for valid Constitutional purposes for 2 years or more.  

Close the Bureau of Land Management.  Absorb its few meaningful functions directly in Department of Interior.  

Halt all new facility construction indefinitely and cancel all facility expansions.

Cancel all Federal Government hiring, cancel all replacement hiring, cancel all new recruitments, appointments, or labor contracts.  Severely limit volunteers.

Stop doing most all of things the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches initiated without any significant forethought the past 85 years.  

Virtually all of them have failed to achieve their once noble purpose, and have since become gigantic, hideously bloated, zombies doing much more actual damage than any imaginary good.

If it's not equal liberty, equal justice, or equal treatment for all; I'm against it.

Infidels Negotiating with Muslims

The “Great Satan” negotiates with Iran.  Am I the only one finding this completely idiotic?

Apparently, some in the western world feel Shia Muslims will honor agreements spoken or written and signed, that are not in their best interests economically militarily or politically with any non-Muslim is ignorant, demented, severely impaired and mentally ill, or all the proceeding.

Has this Administration, its minions and supporters gone completely nuts?

Muslim’s cannot honor any agreements made with infidels, signed or not.  Their spoken or signed words are meaningless.  I believe binding agreements with non-Muslim’s are completely invalid under their laws.

Their word has never been good, spoken or signed, with the “Great Satan”.  

The Shia Muslim leaders of Iran do not intend to comply with any terms, especially those that limit their progress toward nuclear weapons, regardless what is said or written to which they may appear to agree.

Even if some agreement is reached; how could it be enforced?  What penalty, what cure, what punitive measures would be prescribed in the agreement; economic sanctions?  Sanctions have never once changed Iran’s intentions since 1979.  Their public acts of deceit have become more clever, but their intentions remain constant.

Iran’s leadership only understands heinous violence, hideous mayhem and massive destruction.

Only one thing will work to correct their non-conformance with any nuclear non-proliferation agreement; that is the assured destruction of all that is Iran.  Its leadership, the whole of its peoples; their homes, businesses, hospitals, schools and Mosques must be obliterated.

They must understand that we will use the severest cure at the first evidence of any transgression, no matter how slight.

Anything short of the likely use of heinously unfathomable destruction and their virtually total annihilation will compel them to comply.

Shia Muslim sympathizers and inept government officials, beware; you are just a useful idiot for them.

Lately there has been a lot of discussion about preventing terror attacks by experienced novices and very experienced warriors; and a mountain of commentators, journalists, the well-meaning, elected officials and other morons and idiots.  Few of them seem to understand much about severely inhumane violence or the history of successfully ending undesirable violent conflicts.

So, here are a few historical and personal observations about very basic evil behavior and a “How to List” to end terrorism from religious extremists or other primitive bigots.

It is clearly intended to be and is completely incorrect; socially, legally, intellectually, culturally, morally, ethically and politically.

If you have a delicate psyche or are just troubled by severe mayhem and mass homicide, or don’t what to know what’s necessary to stop the chain of escalating successive events of terrorist violence:

If not, what follows is my assessment of what has worked historically with easily observable examples. Some that you have probably not seen or heard of in more than 50 years, if ever.

First, a few general observations

1. Dead people cannot commit crimes of inhumane violence or terrorize anyone.
2. Their dead siblings, spouses, parents, children or associates cannot commit crimes or terrorize anyone in retribution; they’re Dead.
3. If non-participants fear they will be tortured, dismembered, eaten, burned alive, drowned, beheaded, repeatedly raped and publicity murdered, etc., or actually see people being tortured and murdered and it’s widely known; they will avoid terrorist affiliations.   
4. Exchanges of minimally escalated mayhem stops when one group of active participants commits a most unimaginably heinous act on an enormous scale, killing and maiming large percentages of participants and non-participants, and is believed likely to continue doing so unless all hostilities are halted.  (i.e. Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings -  WWII, Sherman’s March to the Sea - Civil War, Kit Carson’s conquest of the Navajo - Indian Wars)
5. The perpetrator is unwilling to listen to accusations from allies, enemies or individuals, and seems unaffected by condemnation by nations, religions, cultures or world organizations, or their spokespeople.

These kinds of things work when carefully and correctly executed in large circumstances and small, like Atomic bombings in Japan, or John “Liver-eating” Johnston (Jeremiah Johnson movie) Plains Indian conflict in the Montana Wilderness, circa 1850-1880.

The United States has not effectively used hardly any meaningful strategies in 70 years, choosing instead something called “limited warfare” an idiotic oxymoron from which sprang elaborate and moronic “Rules of Engagement” ensuring a long list of win-less conflicts through the present day anti-terrorism charades.

My suggestions for annihilating terrorism:

1. Preposition Combined Services Assault Teams, equipment and supplies near all likely future terror event sites.
2. Train and prepare for joint mission assaults upon terrorists regardless of the geographic location.
3. When positioned and upon any credible intelligence, attack the location with multiple assault teams killing all there except a few high value principles, if there; collect all useful intelligence devices; destroy all infrastructure; destroy all assets; contaminate all food and water sources; flatten all possible habitation and exit quickly.
4. Aggressively Interrogate high value assets, when no longer useful, execute them.
5. Publish accounts of the attack with pictures taking credit for all illustrative factual aspects.  Do not comment or reply to any other source accounts, except to discredit them as terrorists sympathizer's lacking first hand knowledge, and blame the terrorists and them for any dead captives.
6. Repeat all the above with increasing frequency, ignoring all commentary, individual, national, or international organization. Quickly elevate the ferocity and heinousness.
7. Do not apologize for anything, even something bad, even if it’s true!

Our incompetent leadership has abandoned what works for the nice, feel-good, political and social correctness of the well-meaning.

Merciless, unrelenting, heinous punishment works, choosing self-imposed artificial limitations does not. Don't worry about Terrorism's new recruits; if you are killing enough of them fast enough, new recruits will be very scarce.

And remember, when they are dead, they can’t terrorize anyone.

I Don’t Want Deficit Reductions,

I Want Deficit Elimination.

For about 83 years deficits have been a common occurrence, just 5 brief periods of slight surpluses.  The last brief period we had small surpluses that were insignificant.  Today’s dollar is worth only about 9.4 cents in 1960 money.  We are not likely to see surpluses of eleven times our recent deficits for several decades.

Given our history, we are not likely to see surpluses in 1960 dollars ever in our soon-to-be more severely devalued currency.

Our history does not bode well for many years of surpluses soon.

50 years of surpluses and 2 years of slight deficits; that’s what I want to see; and stop devaluing of our money.

I don’t understand why our government can’t seem to learn to spend less revenue than it takes in year after year, its ridiculous; over-spending is a very bad habit.

Feds needs to form a new habit; surpluses forever.  Nothing is important enough to spend more money than you will have, including savings (contingency set asides; which we don’t have hardly any of right now.

Just cut all departments and programs until we are spending less than we are likely to take in.  It’s simple, revenues are reasonably predictable.

The current government caused budget morass and debt limit impasse is completely fiction.  More than enough revenue is coming in to run essential services and make debt interest payments.  The shut-down and default are a political sham. 

There is no threat of default. 

Cuts in the growth rates and actual cuts to many Federal Government programs, discretionary and not, will be required and should have been made in small increments, say 2% a year the past four years.  In just a few years surpluses can be achieved.

Surpluses forever! 

Let’s start right now with no debt limit increase until real cuts have been made and non-essential government workers, and obsolete and ineffective programs, have been slowly and systematically eliminated.      

Attention; Future US President

Dear Mr. President,

Economic Growth will not solve our systemic deficit and debt problems quickly enough alone.

Please make the veto your first and frequent choice.  Most of the bills passed by congress are completely and totally unnecessary and not helpful to the majority of taxpaying citizens, nor loyal to the principle of equal treatment under the law.

And as you apparently know, tax and fee increases by any method will damage our nation and get you impeached early in your term.

Remember, "No new taxes."?

Deep spending cuts are necessary.  Elimination and consolidation of Programs and departments, agencies, bureaus, offices, laboratories, institutes, endowments and commissions, etc. are all several decades overdue.

Eliminate all programs that compel participation; because if not enough citizens will choose it willingly to support the advertised benefits, it’s a bad program.  Only programs you must opt into should ever exist, and until then, all new programs must have a widely advertised opt-out clause available to everyone who will never want the purposed benefit, no matter what.

Those who may want or need the benefit someday, should be the only ones paying in.

Incidentally, Government Insurance Program benefits (Social Security, Medicare and Unemployment) are not entitlements; various Welfare Programs are Entitlements. 

Get congress and government officials out of the medical care, manufacturing, marketing, insurance, or energy development businesses, there are not smart enough, reliable enough, or honest enough to be trusted with important matters.

Just an aside; check all public service announcements for accuracy, I think many of them are government self-serving lies; and stop trying to force people to do what some do-gooders think is best for them; and use public service announcements to provide facts without bias, not agenda driven crap by special interests.  

Massive reductions in size, cost, and authorities are mandatory.  The cancer of regulatory excesses needs massive sustained doses of chemo-therapy.

My advice is veto everything the first time it comes from Congress, except repeals previously pass bad ideas and poor choices, like the Unaffordable Non-Care and Medical Tax Act.

Most of the nonsense Congress passes will never get enough votes to override your veto.

If it doesn’t apply to all citizens and residents equally, Veto it.  Every law you sign should apply to everyone, government officials, business executives, congress-persons, judges, military service members, police, union officials, illegal immigrants, convicted criminals and the President equally; if not, it’s a bad law and should never exist.

We want much smaller Federal government, much less power and authority.  Much less regulation, much lower taxes, fewer and less excessive entitlements, very few sustainable benefit programs (Social Security, Medicare, and Unemployment benefits) run by competent professionals, not elected or appointed officials.

Get the federal government out of businesses.  They have no idea what they are doing, they lack foresight and wisdom, and they can’t be trusted with anyone’s money, even their own.

Cut Government spending immediately and massively, if you want to continue working for me; otherwise, “You’re Fired”.      

Stop Daylight Saving Time Now!

Pick a clock setting and leave it there. 

I suggest, at either spring or fall equinox, at high-noon, set each time zones clock to 12:00 adjusted for its zone; and then never adjust clocks forward or back ever again.

The new law could be called; Common Sense Time (CST) or Starlight Conservation Time (SCT); anything less stupid than insinuating we are saving time. 

Changing clocks doesn’t change how much light or dark there is in any day during a year.

I’ll get to false claims that energy is saved by pretending time has changed.    

Daylight Saving Time has been around for most of this century.  In 1918, in order to conserve resources for the war effort, the U.S. Congress placed the country on Daylight Saving Time for seven months in 1918 and 1919.  The law, however, proved so unpopular that it was later repealed.

When America went to war again, Congress reinstated Daylight Saving Time on February 9, 1942.  It remained advanced by one hour year-round until September 30, 1945 (It should have stayed that way).  

From 1945 to 1966, there was no U.S. law about Daylight Saving Time.  So, states and localities were free to observe Daylight Saving Time or not.  This, however, caused confusion -- especially for the broadcasting industry, and for trains and buses.  Because of the different local customs and laws, radio and TV stations and the transportation companies had to publish new schedules every time a state or town began or ended Daylight Saving Time.  (The above paragraph from http://www.nationalatlas.gov/articles/boundaries/a_savingtime.html is absolute baloney; all organizations and businesses can standardize whatever schedule they choose.  I think they were extorted by the government then, much like we are today).

The American law by which we turn our clock forward in the spring and back in the fall is known as the Uniform Time Act of 1966.  The law did not require that anyone observe Daylight Saving Time, but if observing Daylight Saving Time, it must be done uniformly.

By 1966, some 100 million Americans were observing Daylight Saving Time through their own local laws and customs (numbers don’t make right, they frequently indicate mass hysteria, folly or falsehood).  Congress decided to step in end the confusion and establish one pattern across the country.  The Uniform Time Act of 1966 (15 U.S. Code Section 260a) created Daylight Saving Time to begin on the last Sunday of April and to end on the last Sunday of October.  Any area that wanted to be exempt from Daylight Saving Time could do so by passing a local ordinance.  The law was amended in 1986 to begin Daylight Saving Time on the first Sunday in April.

Spring forward...Fall back....  It's ingrained in our consciousness almost as much as the A-B-Cs or our spelling reminder of "i before e...."  And it's a regular event, though perhaps a bit less regular than the swallows coming back to Capistrano.  Even birdbrains have enough sense to regulate their own activities by the length of sunlight available and temperatures.

In 2005 and 2006, Daylight Saving Time begins for most of the United States at 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of April.  Time reverts to standard time at 2 a.m. on the last Sunday of October.

Beginning in 2007, Daylight Saving Time is extended one month and begins for most of the United States at: 2 a.m. on the Second Sunday in March until 2 a.m. on the First Sunday of November.

The new start and stop dates were set in the Energy Policy Act of 2005.  This is just another case of senseless government interference when they should restrain themselves to much more important matters.

Daylight Saving Time -- for the U.S. and its territories -- is NOT observed in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and by most of Arizona (with the exception of the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona) All peoples with good common sense.

Other parts of the world observe Daylight Saving Time as well.  While European nations have been taking advantage of the time change for decades, in 1996 the European Union (EU) standardized a EU-wide "summertime period”.  The EU version of Daylight Saving Time runs from the last Sunday in March through the last Sunday in October.  In the southern hemisphere where summer comes in December, Daylight Saving Time is observed from October to March.  

Equatorial and tropical countries (lower latitudes) don't observe Daylight Saving Time since the daylight hours are similar during every season, so there's no advantage to moving clocks forward during the summer.  Note: nor is there any advantage in any other latitude. 

Energy Savings; more government baloney!  Even if it saved the 1% their badly flawed studies claim, it did nothing about the 99% and it did nothing to encourage domestic, or market driven renewable and sustainable energy production

Light and dark periods rule, not clock settings.  The same purported saving or more can be obtained by changing organization and business schedules, and personal choices of individual activity in concert with the seasons.  No silly nanny-state laws are necessary. 

Safety is an issue.  Having children stand a bus stops or workers operating heavy equipment in the dark, twice a year because clock changes is much less “safe” than adjusting scheduled work or school start and stop times. 

I’ll be changing my behavior with the changing seasons and length of natural and artificial daylight.

I will not be changing my clocks to pretend the sun has come up or gone down earlier or later.

I will encourage and participate in national efforts to repeal any form of Daylight Saving Time and prevent the return of any government efforts to reestablish any such silliness.
